Ibrahim Olabi is a British lawyer of Syrian origin. He had always intended to pursue a career in commercial law. However, as Olabi says, fate had other plans. The war in Syria broke out in 2011. He immediately switched gears to studying criminal law and human rights advocacy in order to help Syrians. This particular conflict has become his life's work for the past decade. In his legal work, he has almost exclusively focused on this war. He has only made an exception for Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. "What Russia is trying to do in Ukraine, it has already done in Syria," Olabi is convinced, seeing the same warfighting strategy on the part of the Kremlin. He heads the legal team of the war crimes documentation initiative The Reckoning Project. In April 2024, the project team and a witness from Ukraine filed a criminal complaint for torture by the Russians with the Federal Court of Argentina.

Journalist Nataliya Gumenyuk speaks with Ibrahim Olabi about the choice of Argentina as the venue for the lawsuit, about Russia's identical "playbook" for waging war, how Syrians are trying to achieve justice, and how to make life difficult for war criminals.

Luke Harding — Betrayal, Drawings by North Korean POWs and Bribes to British Politicians

British journalist and author Luke Harding published a book in the summer of 2026 titled Betrayal: Trump, Putinand the New Age of Conquest. Two major events prompted him to write it. The first was Donald Trump’s return to the White House and his imperialist threats to take control of Greenland or turn Canada into the 51st US state. The secondwas North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un’s decision to send his troops to fight in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Harding realized that the world order would be tested not only by alliances between authoritarian regimes and dictators, butalso by the harmful actions of the United States. For the book, he travelled to villages in eastern Ukraine that are under constant Russian bombardment, spoke to Greenlanders about the possibility of the island being annexed, travelledacross Korea, and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Journalist Nataliya Gumenyuk speaks with Luke Harding about his strangest interview with North Korean prisoners ofwar, the two Zelenskys, the bribery of British politicians by former members of Ukraine’s Opposition Platform – For Life party who are accused of treason, the confrontation between Russia and the United Kingdom, and how he explains thepuzzling affection Ukrainians have for Boris Johnson.

If Ukraine doesn’t resist, you end up in a world with more war | Timothy Snyder

American historian Timothy Snyder is well known for his support of Ukraine. He partly explains this by saying thathe knows Ukrainians and understands what is happening here. He specializes in the history of Eastern and Central Europe. Several years ago, he became chair of the Academic Council of the “Ukrainian History: Global Initiative” project,in which nearly 200 scholars make the case for why Ukrainian history should not be viewed as a local story, but rather understood in a broader global context.

Snyder also explains his support for Ukraine through his principles and his ideas about freedom, whose expression hesees in Ukrainians and from whom he says he has learned a great deal. However, at one seminar with Ukrainian military personnel, Snyder was asked a question that made him stop and think. One of the officers asked under what circumstances he would stop supporting Ukraine, or at least regret having done so.

What did the historian answer? What did he see in Ukraine in 2026, and how does he view the interaction between theUkrainian government and MAGA? What does he think about the lessons of previous wars, tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw, and memory as a luxury? What does hemake of foreigners serving in the Ukrainian military, the new perspective on Ukrainian history, and the connection between being able to have a cup of coffee in Berlin and the frontline in Zaporizhzhia?

All this is discussed in journalist Nataliya Gumenyuk’s conversation with Timothy Snyder.
